Meet the Team

  • Allison Catalano

    Allison Catalano is an economist at the Fraser of Allander Institute at the University of Strathclyde.

    Her research primarily involves socioeconomic inequality, focusing on disability, employment, and health. Prior to becoming an economist, Allison worked as a restaurant manager in the United States.

  • Emma Congreve

    Emma Congreve is an economist and Deputy Director of the Fraser of Allander Institute at the University of Strathclyde.

    She has worked on the Serving the Future project since its inception and is particularly interested in finding ways to ensure that employers are part of the solution to tackling poverty in Scotland.

  • Jennifer Davidson

    Jennifer is Professor of Practice and the Executive Director of The Institute for Inspiring Children’s Futures at the University of Strathclyde.

    She has worked on the Serving the Future project since its inception and is particularly interested in bridging new partnerships to help reveal and resolve the systemic barriers facing children living in poverty.

  • Calum Fox

    Calum is an Associate Economist at the Fraser of Allander Institute and a Researcher at the Centre for Inclusive Trade Policy. Calum has been involved in the Serving the Future project since March 2023.

    His research primarily focuses on the longitudinal workstream, which involves interviewing workers in the Scottish hospitality sector to understand, reduce and prevent in-work poverty.

  • Anna Hirvonen

    Anna is an Accreditation Officer at Living Wage Scotland and leads on the organisations’ work with the hospitality & tourism industry.

    She joined the Serving the Future team in June 2023 and focuses on shaping research findings for the hospitality sector and sharing learning from the project with employers and industry bodies.

  • Helen Schwittay McArthur

    Helen is a project manager at the Institute for Inspiring Children’s Futures.

    She has been working on the Serving the Future Project from the beginning, and ensures the effective delivery of the project, working closely with the research team.

  • Chirsty McFadyen

    Chirsty is an Associate Economist at the Fraser of Allander Institute. She has contributed to multiple workstreams across the project, working with both employers and workers in hospitality.

    Her wider research interests include employment, particularly relating to low-paid work, and the ways in which inequalities intersect with work.

  • Fiona McHardy

    Fiona is Research and Information manager at the Poverty Alliance and has been involved in the development and delivery of the Serving the Future project.

    She has contributed across different workstreams within the project as well as supporting the wider learning from the project around sustainable employment.

  • Peter McKiernan

    Peter McKiernan is Professor of Management in the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship at Strathclyde Business School.

    Peter’s main research and practice is on how countries, institutions and organisations learn about how their future might unfold and how they might prepare their current policies/strategies to be more resilient and creative.

  • Dr Laura Robertson

    Laura is a Senior Research Officer at the Poverty Alliance. She is working across the project to understand the challenges and opportunities for the hospitality sector.

    She is particularly involved in the longitudinal research with workers and focused on the policy implications of single adults’ and families’ experiences of in-work poverty in Serving the Future.

  • Dr Helen Timbrell

    Helen is an independent Consultant, Researcher and Coach working in people and organisational development.

    Her work focusses on supporting organisations to successfully engage employees and volunteers and she supports the Serving The Future project as the facilitator of the employer action learning sets.
