Ready to be a changemaker in the hospitality sector?

What are the benefits of taking part?

Now is the time to reimagine the future of hospitality in Scotland. Covid-19, staff shortages and rising inflation have created a perfect storm for employers. Staff are facing a cost of living crisis pushing many into poverty.

How can businesses adapt to a post-Brexit, post-pandemic world? How can they build resilience into business models? And how can they attract talent with a better deal for staff, whilst managing tight margins and soaring prices?

Serving the Future offers hospitality employers the chance to develop grounded practical solutions to these challenges. Our focus is the recruitment crisis – finding ways to attract talent with a better deal for employees in a way that’s sustainable for businesses. Evidence shows that employers who deliver on Fair Work principles achieve higher productivity, better staff retention and fewer absences.

Employers will also imagine the future of the industry and its workforce, producing ideas for what businesses can do now to prepare.

By taking part, you’ll learn from a network of hospitality employers, influence policy and access CPD courses at Strathclyde University.

Who can get involved?

Hospitality employers with at least 10 direct employees, located in either the Glasgow local authority area or Argyll & Bute. If you are not currently eligible, please consider signing up to our newsletter to stay in the loop.

If you are not the business owner, you will need to be in a position to make policy changes in your workplace that affect your staff. Please discuss with the business owner before applying to take part.

What does the research involve?

  • Strategic Foresight

A workshop where we explore the future of the hospitality industry, and ways to mitigate potential future problems. In a group of 10 employers, you will work through potential changes that might take place in the sector and create scenarios which businesses can act on to help themselves and their workers.

The workshop will be in Glasgow on 20th & 21st September. Travel and accommodation expenses will be paid for those coming from Argyll & Bute.

  • Action Learning Sets

This is where we focus on the recruitment crisis and delivering a better deal for employees in a way that’s sustainable for businesses. Here, we invite employers to generate solutions and test them in their business.

You’ll take part in 6 online sessions over October, November and January (taking a break for the Christmas period), followed by one wrap-up event in Glasgow.

Each week, an employer will present a problem related to low paid work from their workplace and the group will help them to create an action plan to mitigate this. These actions will be implemented between sessions and employers will feed back to the group on the outcomes of the actions.

Employees will also be provided with an anonymous survey to record their thoughts on the actions taken. You must take part in Strategic Futures if you would like to take part in the Action Learning Sets .
